Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 16, 1979. Aaliyah grew up, however, in Detroit, Michigan, where at a young age Aaliyah started singing and auditioning. At the age of 11 Aaliyah performed in Gladys Knight's show in Las Vegas, but it was her debut album Age Ain't Nothing But a Number that really kick-started her singing career. It took another three years for her next album One In a Million which made her a superstar. Two year's later, in 1999, Aaliyah made her debut as an actress in Romeo Must Die. Her next movie was Queen of the Damned, but Aaliyah's untimely dead in a plane crash in 2001 cut short her career.
